What is Abdominoplasty Sydney?
Updated: 03 March 2018. At Abdominoplasty Sydney we specialise in Abdominoplasty, more commonly known as ‘Tummy Tuck‘. The procedure is designed to remove loose skin and excessive fat resulted either from post pregnancy or obesity. The end result is a firmer and toned abdominal region with tighter abdominal muscles and improved contour. We are a proud member of Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Why Abdominoplasty?
There is no shortage of cosmetic or plastic surgeries available today, yet at Abdominoplasty Sydney we believe that Abdominoplasty often achieves the best balance between complexity, efficiency and value. This is not a personalised advice, as we need to have a consultation to determine the best course of action for an individual, yet the procedure has delivered consistent results for many of Abdominoplasty Sydney clients.
The procedure positively impacts the laxity of the muscles and skin which deteriorated often due to pregnancy or age resulting in excessive amounts of fat or loose skin on the abdomen. As part of the surgery, the doctor may advise repairing the muscles as they often stretch throughout the pregnancy.
The effect of the abdominoplasty is long lasting. It allows the physical exercises to improve the focus areas more efficiently.
The procedure makes a profound visual impact by reshaping and transforming the lower abdominal area. It also sculpts the woman’s body and figure which adds to the length of her legs to produce a balanced and harmonious external and internal state.
The transformations that we achieve at Abdominoplasty Sydney are often beyond customer expectations. The results vary and greatly depend upon the individual, here is an example of the surgery result that is the most common:
Who Is It For?
- People with lower than 30 BMI (i.e. Body Mass Index)
- People who have lost weight in the past and have a hanging or loose skin
- Women with excess fat, stretch marks, laxity resulted from pregnancy or weight loss
- Anyone who has protruding abdomen and would like to have excessive fat removed as well as the tightness restored
- Anyone with excessive abdominal fat that does not burn by exercising and having a diet
- A patient who wants to see more results from their physical activities/exercises
How we do it at Abdominoplasty Sydney?
The doctors at Abdominoplasty Sydney use general anesthetic throughout the surgery. Based on the complexity and the type of the procedure (see types below for more details) a horizontal or vertical scar may be required. A typical surgery requires a cut to be made across the lower abdomen and a circular cut around the belly button. The skin and fat are then separated from the muscle and removed. The excessive skin and fat from the top of the abdomen are then pulled down to cover the removed section and join the initial lower cut made at the lower part of the abdomen. The muscles are then stitched together to tighten the tummy followed by a liposuction to contour the new curves and shape.
The procedure can take up to 3 hours to complete, yet on average we see the completion times of 2 hours or less. The recovery period in the hospital can last up to 4 days. In practice, we see most clients complete it earlier, typically within a couple of days. The muscle recovery may feel painful in which case the use of pain pump can be expected for a couple of days.
It is required that you wear a compression garment for a couple of weeks after the surgery. It is also advised that you restrain from any physical activities or lifting anything heavy for two months, which is why you should return to your normal lifestyle. Driving a car is not allowed for 3 weeks after the surgery.
Our clients at Abdominoplasty Sydney see the scars gradually fade with time with most of the healing completed within 1-2 years. We often see all marks or scars disappear, yet the results will vary from person to person. It is also normal to allow up to a year for you tummy senses to restore.
Abdominoplasty Types
Based on your current condition and the desired result, the procedure may slightly vary and be either cosmetic or reconstructive in nature. The factors to be considered to select the best type of abdominoplasty for the patient are the amounts of fat, strength or weakness of the abdominal muscles and overall contour shape. At Abdominoplasty Sydney we distinguish 5 main types of Abdominoplasty:
Full Abdominoplasty
The full Abdominoplasty is the most common procedure we see our customers take at Abdominoplasty Sydney. The surgery involves a hip to hip scar treating lower and upper abdominal areas. Although the scar heals remarkably well over the time, it is positioned below bikini line to further minimise visual imperfections (if any). The procedure may also (optionally) include liposuction, muscle repair and translocation of the belly button most often.
Although liposuction is optional, treating hips and flanks is often done at the same time as this approach produces the most visible results.
We are also aware of the concerns of some men and women about using drains for abdominoplasty, hence alternative modern approaches are used in Abdominoplasty Sydney.
Lower Abdominoplasty
Lower Abdominoplasty is also known as a ‘Mini-Tuck’. The procedure is designed for patients looking only to improve the lower abdomen who have small amounts of skin looseness. This is the second most common form of Abdominoplasty we see at Abdominoplasty Sydney.
This form of Abdominoplasty typically requires a smaller scar made right above the pubic area. As with Full Abdominoplasty, it is recommended to undergo a liposuction. It allows tightening the overall shape of your abdominal at the same time. It is important to note that the belly button is not moved as most of the work is done below the level of the belly button.
The complexity and length of the procedure is reduced compared to the ‘Full Abdominoplasty’ and the recovery time is also shorter.
Extended Abdominoplasty
Extended Abdominoplasty is a variation of the Complete Abdominoplasty procedure which additionally includes the removal of the excess fat from the sides, also known as ‘love handles’.
Fleur De Lis
This is a highly targeted procedure created to treat great amounts of fat where the classic approach is insufficient and ineffective. The horizontal cut of the Complete Abdominoplasty is complemented with a vertical cut along the midsection to achieve greater results. Additionally, unlike with the Full Abdominoplasty, the incision is done under the breast and the skin is pulled bottom-up.
Body Lift
The Body Lift is one of the most intensive and exhaustive procedure we undertake. It addresses the most challenging customers with extraordinary levels of excessive fat. It is ultimately Fleur De Lis with the addition of skin tightening on both the abdomen and back.
How Much Does Abdominoplasty Cost?
There are multiple factors that would contribute to the price of the surgery. It includes the type of procedure you undertake, an amount of fat required to be removed, your health fund and more.
